4 reasons why the Nintendo Switch 2 has to come in the next 2 years

The Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017 and has now been on the market for around 5 years. Many gamers want a new edition of the Nintendo Switch with more powerful hardware that can also handle future top titles.

New games push the Nintendo Switch to its limits

Many new games are now pushing the Nintendo Switch to its limits. The new Pokemon: Crimson & Purple suffers from performance issues that are hard to overlook (via gamerant.com). In addition to glitches, clipping errors and crashes, there are also sometimes severe frame rate drops.

Some believe that the current phase feels like the “late era” of a Nintendo console: Nintendo is releasing a second iteration of popular games (Pokémon, Fire Emblem and Kirby) and is slowly preparing for the next generation of hardware.

Microsoft finalizes deal with Nintendo over CoD

Microsoft wants to close a 10-year deal with Nintendo if the purchase of Activision/Blizzard works (via theverge.com). For some, the development of a Call of Duty for the Nintendo consoles is a good sign that the development of the next console could also fall within this period.

It could still be a few months before the deal is finalized:

• The US competition authority FTC will vote on the deal in early January 2023.
• The British Competition Authority (CMA) has until March 1, 2023 to make a final decision.
• The European Union has until April 11 to approve Microsoft’s deal.

But some think that’s just a guess. Because there is already CoD: Mobile, which also runs on weak cell phones. That could just as well be ported to the switch and would have fulfilled the contract with Nintendo.

Nintendo consoles have shorter life cycles than PlayStation and Xbox

Nintendo develops and releases new hardware products more often than Sony or Microsoft. At Sony there is an average of 7 to 8 years between two consoles: the PS3 was released in 2006, the PS4 was released in 2013.

At Nintendo, new consoles or modifications (iterations) come onto the market much faster.

• Wii was released in late 2006
• In 2011 came the Nintendo 3DS
• In 2012, the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS XL were released
• The Nintendo Switch followed in 2017
• Then in 2019 came the OLED model of the Switch

Nvidia has ended production of the chip for the Switch

A person close to Nvidia has stated that Nvidia plans to end production of the Tegra X1+, better known as the Tegra X1 Mariko, sometime in 2021 (via pcmag.com). The Tegra X1 is in every Nintendo Switch and is responsible for the graphical performance.

Should Nintendo no longer get any new chips for consoles, then you would either have to switch to an alternative graphics chip or you would already be developing a successor with a new chip module.
