Elden Ring on the Last Gen – This is how the network test performed on PS4 and Xbox One

The content of the Elden Ring network test was promising, but how does it look technically when it comes to the Last Gen?

As for the content of the closed network test for Elden Ring, most fans agree: With ten bosses and mini-bosses as well as the mysterious game world, there was really a lot on offer. But what about the technical side, especially when it comes to the Last Gen? After all, FromSoftware sends us into a real open world for the first time. Two technical checks reveal how this journey is technically designed on PS4 and Xbox One. We summarize everything worth knowing for you.

Elden Ring in the preliminary technical check

It’s all about this: Recently, selected fans were able to get a small impression of FromSoftware’s new action RPG Elden Ring in a network test. It was possible to play on both the Current and the Last Gen. It was particularly exciting to see how the dark fantasy game performs technically on Xbox One and PS4. Eurogamer.net and Digital Foundry provide the answer.

But beware: Only the network test version of Elden Ring was examined. The statements that are made do not necessarily have to apply to the final game. There is still time for optimization until the finished title appears on February 25th.

The technical checks came to the following results for resolution and frame rate:

PlayStation 4: On the standard PS4 model, the game runs at 1080p and 30 FPS, such as Dark Souls 3.
Xbox One: On the standard Xbox One model it is only 900p at 30 FPS.
PlayStation 4 Pro: 1800p bei 30 FPS.
Xbox One X: Also 1800p at 30 FPS.

It was noted that Elden Ring in the current version looks much better on the PS4 than on the Xbox One, which is noticeable in the vegetation, shadows and textures. When comparing the One X and PS4 Pro, on the other hand, the Xbox is just ahead of the game, as the dynamic resolution allows a sharper image to be achieved.

More about Elden Ring:

That can be said so far

With Elden Ring, FromSoftware has taken on more than ever before, as there is a real open world in the action RPG for the first time, instead of the “open hose” with many limitations, as we know it from the Dark Sous series. There are also dynamic changes in weather and time of day. Nevertheless, the performance – at least in the network test – on the Last Gen models is roughly comparable to that of Dark Souls 3, according to the technology checks mentioned.

Of course, Elden Ring has a little more to offer on the current gen consoles. Here fans can choose whether they prefer to explore the world in native 4k or prefer a higher frame rate of 60 FPS instead.

There are also shortcomings: Apart from the resolution and frame rate, from a technical point of view, we were also able to determine a few quirks during the network test on the PS5. So now and then there were stronger stutters, which was especially noticeable during boss fights. Pop-ups were also clearly visible. However, it should be mentioned again that it was only a network test, until the release, three months can be used for fine-tuning.
