New survival shooter on Steam looks like Left 4 Dead with aliens, starts with 11,000 players

On December 10th, the new shooter GTFO for PC started on Steam. On the first weekend, the indie project was able to attract over 11,000 players and received “very positive” ratings. MeinMMO introduces you to the hardcore shooter.

What kind of game is this? You are prisoners and your prison guard sends you to an abandoned research station to look for data. In terms of gameplay, GTFO can best be compared with well-known games such as Left 4 Dead or PayDay.

With a team of four you move through the different levels, you should get something and disappear again. Ideally, you will attract as little attention to yourself as possible. Tactical action is a must.

Opponents can quickly overrun you and appear in hordes if you are not careful. Should the cautious procedure go wrong, you will usually entrench yourself in a safe position and hope that you have more bullets than opponents come.

Ammunition and healing are scarce and rather sparsely distributed in the levels. In contrast to the classics, GTFO plays in a sci-fi setting. Your opponents are aliens who are largely reminiscent of humans. Mutated, distorted people. A special focus is on the sound backdrop, which makes everything even more eerie, because the developers are still shouting at you themselves.

GTFO was created by the Swedish indie studio 10 Chamber. Many members of the studio have already worked on Payday and want to bring the spirit of the game into GTFO. In 2019 the devs gave us exclusive insights into their first, own project.

This is how GTFO arrives: On Steam, GTFO had 11,091 players at the top for the release weekend (via steamcharts.com). The ratings are 88% “very positive” with 22,101 votes since Early Access two years ago. The recent reviews are still 82% positive.

At the moment GTFO is only available for the PC and only via Steam. The devs would like to make a version for PlayStation and Xbox, as it was called before 2019, but at that time the partner was still missing. This may change after a successful release.

1.0 release brings “a lot of awesome stuff”

What’s new for the release? With version 1.0, a number of changes came into play that make GTFO easier, especially for beginners (via Steam). The most important change are the bots.

Since the release, if in doubt, you can even play solo with 3 AI colleagues. That should be difficult, but doable. With only one friend and 2 bots on the team, most missions (called “expeditions”) should work out quite well.

The GameStar colleagues still find GTFO too difficult, but that is exactly the right thing.

In addition, there are now optional checkpoints. Through this, a mission is no longer directly lost if you make a mistake. Instead, you will be reset to the checkpoint. If you prefer hardcore, you can deactivate the option.

For fans of the game, there are now cosmetics that you can use to customize your prisoners. By completing expeditions, you can unlock new clothes, for example.

What the players say: On Steam, gamers are excited about GTFO. FaYde ‘, for example, calls the new shooter the “best co-op game ever” and Happy Christmas writes: “You introduced a lot of awesome stuff with the 1.0 release.”

Since the release, GTFO has also been recommended for newbies, but the general consensus is that you need friends. Competent friends, as one player specifies. Above all, there is criticism that not everyone likes the difficulty. Mistakes are severely punished and you will not complete every mission successfully. Prepare to die.

If you are into this type of game, you can also try your hand at a more classic zombie setting with Back 4 Blood. The spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead was released in October:
