WTF PlayStation! I didn’t expect such a morbid The Last of Us 2 joke

The German PlayStation site’s tweet is pretty morbid… but also a little bit funny.

You go unsuspectingly to the PlayStation Germany Twitter page and find a supposedly harmless tweet that makes fun of what is probably the most violent scene in The Last of Us 2. A little punch in the pit of the stomach for TLoU fans, but it’s also kind of funny.

Do you also like to play golf?

The tweet innocently asks “Which of these emojis suit you?” before showing some images that match emojis associated with video games: the meditation emoji for Kena, the ax for Kratos from God of War, screws for Ratchet & clank.

So far so unspectacular, but the fourth emoji shows a female golfer and no, this is not about a new PGA Tour. Much more is meant by Abby from The Last of Us 2. Anyone who knows the game also knows that the golf club doesn’t symbolize Abby’s favorite hobby – unless her hobby is breaking people’s heads. Ouch.

It’s the same golf club that Abby uses to kill Joel at the beginning of the game. Of course, that makes the joke quite morbid, especially considering how brutal the scene is and how many Joel is a beloved character. Some fans even try to avert their fate with the help of mods, others honor the emotional scene with impressive cosplay.

Originally, Abby wasn’t supposed to wield a golf club, but a knife. That probably wouldn’t have made the scene any less difficult to watch, but maybe at least the emoji wouldn’t be quite as nasty.

Dishonorable, but kinda funny

And admittedly, after the first “Ooh, that’s nasty” reaction, I might have smiled a little. Many fans feel the same way in the comments under the tweet, who describe the golf emoji as evil, godless and dishonorable, but also laugh about it. For some others, however, the joke goes too far and goes beyond good taste. Sure, humor is subjective after all, but with such a dark joke, the divided opinions shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Be honest: Did you laugh at the Abby emoji or do you just think it’s nasty?
