The Last of Us in UE5 blows my mind: if the remake doesn’t look like it, I’m not playing it!

The Last of Us looks nothing short of impressive in Unreal Engine 5.

The Last of Us looks nothing short of impressive in Unreal Engine 5.

Whether a remake of The Last of Us makes sense or not has been hotly debated in the community for months.

I think: Yes, I would definitely play a new edition, under two conditions: First, I wish the remake would implement the refined gameplay mechanics of The Last of Us: Part 2. And secondly, I really want to play Joel and Ellie’s journey together again with polished graphics.

And if the remake still looks as fantastic as in the video below, then I’m so into it. In it, Youtuber “ENFANT TERRIBLE” shows us how the post-apocalyptic Naughty Dog adventure could run in Unreal Engine 5 (via DualShockers), and I’ll keep it short: wow!

The fan trailer takes us through several post-apocalyptic environments that are incredibly atmospheric thanks to realistic lighting effects. And pay attention to the details; Honestly, it doesn’t look that nice outside my window.

Later in the video we also see a close-up of Joel’s reworked character model, and here, too, we can see significantly more details than in the original. Wrinkles, wrinkles, skin pores, the shine in his eyes. Joel looks (almost) like a real person, and I don’t think I’ve had any unpleasant uncanny valley effects.

Right now I almost regret watching the video above, because it raised my expectations of a possible remake way too high. It is questionable whether the rumored new edition will graphically match the material shown. But as we all know, hope dies last.

Linda Sprenger

Linda Sprenger is a huge The Last of Us fan and would play a remake. While she still thinks the original looks fantastic today, The Last of Us: Part 2 has shown her that there’s always room for improvement. She would definitely welcome a remake that graphically matches the sequel or even the video above.

What makes Unreal Engine 5 so special?

The engine provides developers with modern technical tools, two of which stand out in particular:

  • The dynamic lighting technology is right at the forefront “lumens”, which is calculated in real time. A very authentic lighting mood can be created with indirect light, reflections and shadows.
  • Also noteworthy is the “nanite”-Technique that takes care of the geometric calculation of polygons, which when put together represent the objects in the game. Due to the high number and precise calculation in real time, it is possible to generate a very high level of detail.

Rumors about The Last of Us Remake

Well-known journalist and insider Jason Schreier already reported last year that Naughty Dog should be working on a new edition of The Last of Us. Since then, new speculations and rumors about the remake have surfaced again and again.

Just a few days ago, GamePro reported on the LinkedIn profile of a former Naughty Dog employee who claims to have worked on a remake. It should almost certainly have been The Last of Us. However, this has not been officially confirmed.
