AMD and Intel patch processor vulnerabilities
May patch day at the CPU manufacturers
The two processor manufacturers Intel and AMD have released security patches that fix several vulnerabilities in CPUs and peripherals.
News
Intel released two new security patches in May: A BIOS update and a new version for Intel Boot Guard and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). But also competitor AMD was not idle and has more than just a handful of vulnerabilities Fixed.
The most serious vulnerabilities are each rated with the severity “High”. “Critical” security gaps were not discovered in either case.
At Intel, the vulnerabilities listed are ways in which attackers could have secured unauthorized rights. However, local access would have been necessary for all vulnerabilities. According to Intel, processors up to the 10th generation are affected in the end use area. As “hot” suspected, newer models of the 11th and 12th generation are not exempt from the security gaps.
At AMD, a total of four vulnerabilities are listed with the severity “High”. These concern the System Management Mode (SMM), the AMD Secure Processor (ASP) and the System Management Unit (SMU).
Intel recommends updating the BIOS as soon as the respective manufacturers provide new versions in which the gaps listed have been closed.
