Modern Warfare 2's new weaponsmith solves a major Warzone newcomer problem

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has already revealed a lot about its new mechanics and also introduced the weaponsmith. The unlocking of attachments and weapons changes in the new CoD and could, also with a view to Warzone, solve a big problem for newcomers.

What’s the problem? The CoD series has maintained, expanded and polished its progression systems for many years. You level up 4 systems while playing in Call of Duty: Vanguard:

  • account level
  • weapon level
  • Battle Pass
  • operator level

Modern Warfare 2 will likely feature these systems as well. But at least the weapons are doing a lot.

What changes? Previously, you unlocked a weapon via your account level or a challenge and then had to level up another 60 weapon levels to unlock all the attachments.

While some players enjoy the feeling of unlocking something, it’s also a hurdle for newcomers. Because if you enter a match at CoD: Warzone with your unleveled beginner weapons, the naked weapon is bad and simply hardly usable.

The new weaponsmith in CoD MW2 2022 alleviates this problem and introduces a new way of unlocking weapons. We will show you the details known so far on MeinMMO.

Weapon families and pool attachments in the new Weaponsmith

How does CoD MW2 solve the problem? If you are new to CoD MW2, you still have to unlock weapons and attachments. But instead of starting at 0 for each individual weapon, you have “pool attachments” available for the weapon classes.

So if you like to play assault rifle-like weapons and level up this class in particular, you will get attachments that you can screw directly onto any other weapon of this class that you have unlocked.

So you have immediate opportunities to improve your weapon and don’t have to run through the match with the mostly useless basic rifle. This applies to CoD MW2, but also to the new Warzone.

Unlocking new weapons is also changing and is now more related to weapon families. However, the first details about the system are still somewhat unclear.

The weapon families and pool attachments don’t seem to be limited to traditional weapon classes like Assault Rifle or LMG. It might even be related to the fictitious manufacturers that Call of Duty comes up with for the guns.

There is then a certain amount of weapons that you unlock through a family sharing pool attachments. If you play weapons from a family, you will unlock new guns from the category.

The complete weapon smith should offer more depth and more control over the adjustments in CoD MW2. If you are looking for more details, you can find them here: The 5 most important innovations in CoD MW2 and why I can only think of Warzone 2.

It’s still too early for a complete analysis of the new weaponsmith, as more details are still missing. But after the first information it is clear that CoD MW2 is trying a new approach and to defuse the problems of the “naked” and lousy basic weapons.

Whether in Warzone 2 or Modern Warfare 2 – newcomers will benefit from the revised system, even if you may not be able to screw together meta weapons with the pool attachments. A good underflow attachment is sometimes worth its weight in gold.
