Poll: 80 percent of gamers think cheating is okay
Run around the corner in the online shooter and immediately drop dead – a familiar experience for many. The suspicion quickly creeps in that someone is tricking with unfair means. Even in more childish scenarios like Fall Guys, you regularly catch people whose characters are running just a little bit faster than they should. That spoils everyone’s enjoyment of competitive play. Or something not?
Is cheating okay?
According to an American study, around 80 percent of gamers say that cheating in games isn’t so bad when it comes to the question of whether cheating is okay. Of course, a distinction must be made between online and single-player titles. Directly related to multiplayer experiences, however, a large subset of 59 percent still think cheating is okay.
the Study was provided by Time2Play conducted, a website that specializes in finding and categorizing American online casinos. This may sound dubious, but the site itself is trustworthy and the statistics are not far-fetched either. With a number of participants of just over 1000 people, the values are to be regarded as representative, with a statistical deviation of around five percent.

Nevertheless, the values should be treated with caution: It is said that it is particularly Playstation players who find cheating okay and some Pages cite the cited studyto make the claim that there is more cheating on consoles than on PC. However, this can also be related to the fact that they are less often confronted with cheats and therefore perceive it as less devastating for their game. Another factor is what is actually perceived as a cheat.
What counts as cheating?
Cheating is basically any type of cheating in a video game. Theoretically, anyone who uses means that the developers have not intended as game elements is cheating. According to the American study, the use of glitches counts for cheating for the majority of respondents. Even looking up solutions is considered “cheating” by some, so it’s no surprise that so many players don’t have a problem with it.
An all-clear is still not given, because another Study of Irdeto has a lot more solid, but also more negative numbers when it comes to cheating – at least on the PC. According to an online survey of more than 9,000 participants conducted in several countries (including Germany), 43 percent of players have already used third-party cheat software, and 12 percent of them do so regularly.

The reasons for this are diverse. The American study by Time2Play reveals some of them.

- 48 percent cheat to have more fun
- 36 percent cheat to compete against other players who are behaving unfairly
- 35 percent find it easier to defeat opponents with it
- 33 percent use tricks to unlock things and
- 32 percent say it’s okay because streamers also cheat
Here it must again be considered that it is also about single-player games and not only about online games. By the way, the acceptance of cheats is higher the younger the players are.
