WoW: Warlocks in Dragonflight – wishes and ideas for talents & Co.
Warlocks have seen quite a few changes over the years, some cool adjustments, some bad setbacks. The latter still make some Warlock players glassy-eyed – you only have to mention the demonologists’ metamorphosis to see seasoned summoners cry. Accordingly, everything is definitely not rosy with the warlock when you look at the current iteration of destruction, affliction and demonology. That’s why we use the time “between the expansions” for some daydreaming – come with us to the castle in the air and let’s chat about the construction sites and possible solutions for sorcerers. If even a fraction of these positive adjustment approaches are actually implemented in Dragonflight, it would ignite a firestorm of joy in our black hearts!
Sinister savior as a tank…
What all three Warlock specs have in common is their role: they’re supposed to deliver DpS, that’s what they’re there for. Whether with monsters, fireballs or DoT effects. But why does it have to be like this? Because if you approach the witcher’s abilities with a bit of imagination, the coolest possible applications will come up straight away. For example, how about our warlock becoming a chaos tank?
We’re bringing high amounts of health anyway, as well as barriers that absorb damage. And in the past it was possible to survive against large groups of opponents by draining life, casting DoTs and various defensive skills. The basis for a spec that excels as a demonic defender is already there. Then, for example, Torghast anima powers such as Void Etched Talisman to receive more healing with health stones. Fiery chaos auras could provide a lot of flair or the visual transformation into a semi-demonic form complete with horns and scales – a kind of tank return from metamorphosis. Anyone who has something to complain about, simply has something against fun and joy!
If the brawl in close combat is a bit too much for you, we have an alternative, a compromise: why not a witcher spec that throws itself completely into the support role? Sure, we already have helping options with Curses, Healthstone Well, and Demonic Gateway. But there could be so much more! Let’s infuse entire groups of players with demonic power that will allow them to attack faster. Or pack damage done to the opponent into a kind of health reservoir that we can tap into to heal and/or provide a barrier to other heroes. Summoning a cooldown demon would also work great as a support if that super minion was buffing all players with something like a percentage of Versatility like Heart of Endereth does in Torghast.

In theory, warlocks can draw on a variety of demons, but in practice it boils down to the usual suspects. Anyone who is out and about in the open world hides behind the purple garbage bag. If you need damage, you will simply get an imp out of the Pokéball, unless you want it to interrupt very rarely instead of delivering maximum damage – then you need a spell lock. The Succubus (or now Incubus!) is practically worthless in PvE. On top of that, the demonologist, who actually devotes the most attention to demons, always uses the fel guard. So, bizarrely, he has the least variety. Accordingly, one should break the strict rules regarding demons. For example, how about more variations that use the same skills – glyphs exist, but they’re a clunky joke compared to the menagerie of hunters, who are allowed to take every imaginable animal with them. Why not permanent collection of demons that can then be summoned at any time? In this context, a big request to the developers to reverse the long cast time for primary demons … or at least to significantly reduce the cooldown of Infernal Swiftness.

Life instead of splinters: blood magic!
An essential fantasy characteristic of warlocks, necromancers and other dark creatures is the fact that they like to play with their own life force. According to the motto “Blood is power” we can already risk our own health in order to receive advantages. Just look at the Burning Charge talent, which we use to literally burn our life points to get faster. Or Dark Pact, with which we sacrifice health in order to avoid higher damage. We say: let much more be possible here! How about the life cost for hardcore summoning of demons? Not in general, but something along the lines of “every x seconds you may summon Dreadstalkers / cast Chaos Bolt for x percent of your current health”. That would allow for a kind of desperate act in sticky situations when soul shards are in short supply.
Any demonologist will probably know that even more creatures under our control are always great, which is why we have a very specific request for the summoner spec at this point: more focus on demons! Instead of a demon bolt, a quick summon of monstrous pets that attack the opponent would be cool. The damage can be the same as Demon Blitz, it’s all about “Class Fantasy”.
