Meta instead of Facebook: The VR glasses Quest 2 will soon need a new account. This can be connected to Facebook, but does not have to be.

Previously, a Facebook profile had to be used to use the Quest 2 VR glasses. That will change from August 2022. Then the manufacturer Meta (formerly Facebook) wants one own meta account for VR glasses and Meta Horizon offer mandatory. However, owners of an Oculus account can still use it until January 2023.
The meta account should include name, email address, phone number, payment information and date of birth and is not intended to be a dedicated social media profile. A connection to your own Facebook or Instagram account is optional.
So far, Quest 2, which was released in 2020, cannot be bought in Germany due to the Facebook account requirement. It is still unclear whether this will change with the switch to meta accounts. The planned Quest Pro (aka Project Cambria) will probably also appear with a quest account. A release in Germany at the start of sales in 2022 is more likely.
In addition to the meta account, there is also a meta horizon profile that can be used as a social profile in VR environments and in the web browser. It is also possible to create several such profiles, for example to differentiate between a professional work account and a leisure profile.
Similar to Instagram, the Horizon profile does not offer friends, but followers. Meta apparently sees not only its own future in the “Metaverse”, but also the future of influencers. Oculus friends are automatically adopted as followers.
