Gamescom 2022: Square Enix is there – but differently than expected

Gamescom 2022 () von Koelnmesse

After the cancellations of many large exhibitors, the question was justified: Which publishers are coming to Cologne for Gamescom 2022 this year? After Ubisoft and Microsoft, Square Enix has now confirmed its participation. However, with a small catch.

Square Enix is in Cologne – with a store
**Updated July 13th**

As Square Enix announced, they will have a booth at Gamescom 2022. However, there will be no new games to be seen on 114 square meters in Hall 05.2: Instead, fans can “180 articles on popular brands such as Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest” arise, as stated in the press release. Many of the fan articles are otherwise only available in the online store. There is also a bonus item every day with a purchase value of €50 or more. Microsoft is on site

Microsoft announced on Twitter that they will be on the Gamescom show floor in 2022. Above all, the Xbox community should be in the foreground. It should be “celebrated together” while “small updates” on current games are presented. In plain language, this probably means: Microsoft is on site, but you shouldn’t expect big revelations, announcements or surprises.

We’re back on that @gamescom show floor!
This year we are celebrating one thing above all: YOU – OUR COMMUNITY.

Let’s celebrate together as we bring you little updates on our latest games!

Ubisoft is there

You can definitely count on Ubisoft, THQNordic and Kalypso as well. Ubisoft announced in a press release that, as an official partner of GamesCom, they want to make the games “physically tangible” for fans again. They are working “on a concept that will meet the local framework conditions and safety precautions in terms of content and organization,” the press release continues. Ubisoft has not yet revealed which or how many games will be shown.

Commitments from THQNordic and Kalypso

THQNordic gets more specific in an interview with gameseconomy. According to PR boss Florian Emmerich, the Viennese games publisher, which belongs to the Embracer Group, will exhibit nine games at Gamescom, four of them previously unannounced. Since there is now more space in hall eight due to Wargaming’s cancellation, the stand would have been enlarged to around 1000 square meters. Emmerich also emphasizes that, from THQNordic’s point of view, the cancellation of other large exhibitors would have “no major impact” on the importance of the trade fair itself.

Publisher Kalypso (including Tropico, Port Royale, Commandos 3 Remaster) also signaled early on that it would be represented at the Cologne Games Fair in its old size. However, managing director Anika Thun warned in an interview with GamesWirtschaft afraid that the trade fair will lose important points of attraction for visitors due to the cancellations of the international big names.

Other commitments include Aerosoft, Assemble, Koch Media, Sega and Bandai Namco.
