Long-awaited Star Wars film apparently cancelled
Star Wars and cinema go together like lightsabers and Jedi. The next – and only known by name – Star Wars film in Disney’s pipeline has now apparently been cancelled. Rogue Squadron (or Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) should have been released in cinemas worldwide by Christmas 2023, but has since been completely removed from the planning.
Why was Rogue Squadron canceled?
There were already a few problems when working on Rogue Squadron. Was hired as a director PattyJenkins, known for her work on Wonder Woman 1984. A first postponement was announced at the end of 2021. Officially, the reason given was that Jenkins was too busy with other projects – she is working on a third film about Wonder Woman and on a Cleopatra strip, among other things. But it was also rumored to be creative differences. Jenkins pointed at one interview at how time consuming it is on the numerous Requirements to be considerate and to have to clarify all decisions:
“It’s a very different way of working. I’m constantly on the phone with everyone and I’m in Zoom meetings with everyone Star Wars-related. I’m relatively free on the story we want to tell, but you have to be real Knowing who did what, who’s doing what, where it’s going and how it all works and what designs have been used is a very different way of working that’s taking some getting used to.”
What Star Wars movies are coming? When is Episode X coming?
Also the two Game of Thrones authors Benioff and Whitewho were supposed to be writing a Star Wars film series, jumped off – officially due to time management issues. The two chose to work for Netflix in the conflict. The first part of the Benioff Weiss films should have started in 2023. After the end of the collaboration with the GoT showrunners should then Rogue Squadron fill the timeslot in the 2023 Christmas business, which is now also falling through. It is completely unknown what became of the film series project or will possibly change hands.
The next Star Wars trilogy will be directed, produced and written by Rian Johnson (who created Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi). The project was announced in 2017, and since then Johnson has repeatedly denied on his Twitter profile that it had been canceled in the meantime. an appointment for Star Wars: Episode X however, still does not exist. Otherwise, information is scarce. According to Johnson, “his” trilogy will explore aspects of lore not previously seen in the films and accompany a new cast of characters, although he doesn’t rule out familiar characters making appearances.
Also director Taika Waititi, known for Thor: Love and Thunder, among other things, is currently working on a Star Wars film. Like his interpretation of Thor, it should be a little different from the usual Star Wars flicks, but still do justice to the template. There is no title yet, Waititi’s flick is supposed to be – as of now – the Star Wars gap end of 2023 fill in the cinemas.
Also Kevin Feige (Producer of the MCU) is currently working on a Star Wars film. There is no title or release yet, the project is still in a very early phase. It was announced in 2019.
What does the future of Star Wars look like?
