Twitch streamer breaks her back in 2 places during PR campaign – blames company at TwitchCon

TwitchCon took place in San Diego at the weekend: The Lenovo Legion company staged show fights between streamers there. To do this, they set up a pool whose bottom was covered with a layer of foam cubes. Twitch streamer Adriana Chechik (30) jumped into the pool on Sunday, October 9th and was badly injured. She blames the organizers.

What was the idea for this pool?

Lenovo Legion set up a pit at TwitchCon in San Diego, with two raised platforms. The pit was covered with a layer of foam cubes.
The idea was that two streamers stand on the pedestals and beat each other with foam bats until one falls off the small pedestal, so that it then lands “softly” on the dice: It’s called the “gladiator game” – older readers know it the idea maybe from “American Gladiators (1989-1996)”.

Seriously injured while jumping into the pit

Then it went terribly wrong: Twitch streamer Adriana Chechik had just won her fight. She cheered, jumping up and into the cubes.

When she got up, you could already see her pained face, which she wanted to cover with a smile. When asked if she was fine, she nodded briefly, but apparently quickly realized that something was not at all fine.

She says, “I can’t get up,” hiding her face in the foam cubes. A paramedic is called. The commentators talk soothingly, although they obviously have no way of knowing how the woman is doing: “She’s fine” – “Paramedics! She’s fine.”

What has happened there? As it turned out later, Adriana Chechik broke her back in two different places during the jump.

The streamer says: An off-duty paramedic recognized the seriousness of her injury, ordered her to lie still and reassured her. On the same day, the streamer had to undergo a surgical procedure (via twitter).

Streamers had to sign a liability waiver

What’s the discussion now? Lenovo Logic’s “pit” was already discussed critically in advance and is now seen even more critically. As PC gamers reports, streamers who take part in the exhibition fights had to sign a liability waiver beforehand.

Even before the incident, streamers had been injured in connection with the event: a streamer injured her knee when she got off the podium (via twitter). She says she can never trust Twitch at an event like this ever again.

Others have also complained about problems with back pain.

After the incident with Adriana Chechik, the pit was closed. The organizer says (via kotaku):

We are aware of incidents at TwitchCon where visitors to our gladiator game have injured with the foam pit at the Lenovo booth. The area has now been closed to further use while we work with the organizers to take a closer look at the incidents.

What are the allegations of the streamer? Adriana Chechik says: Lenovo Legion would have told people to jump in. They would have even said butt first.

The pit was also opened on the second day after people had been injured so badly on the first day that they had to leave TwitchCon with a cast.

She was also annoyed that the commenters were mean to her and told her to just walk away from the pain.
