The Netflix series “The Witcher” is getting a fourth season – but without Henry Cavill. The actor drops out and is replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

The witcher season 1
One of the greatest strengths of “The Witcher” is clearly Henry Cavill as the grumpy titular hero.

In the past few days, fans of the Witcher series have received surprising and quite sad news: the Witcher actor Henry Cavill will no longer embody the white-haired monster hunter from season 4 onwards. The actor announced this on social media.

A replacement has already been found, because from the fourth season there will be no less than Liam Hemsworth take on the role of Geralt of Rivia. Although this is a bit younger than Cavill, he could definitely work with the help of the costume and mask.

However, Cavill’s exit is a huge loss for many fans of the Witcher series. Because despite initial skepticism, the Superman actor established himself as possible best choice for portraying Geralt.

One of the reasons for this is that Cavill is a self-confessed fan of the underlying books and video games. However, not everyone who is part of the Netflix production should feel the same way.

Why is Henry Cavill quitting?

An official reason for Cavill’s exit was not given, but it was previous interviews of the actor indicate disagreements behind the scenes. Cavill said he wanted to play Geralt for as long as he could along with the rest of the team to tell great stories that honor Andrzej Sapkowski’s work.

So Cavill was careful to always do justice to the template, which was always evident in his performance. While the plot in the first season of the series still seemed to largely follow the same ideals, a different path was chosen from season 2 at the latest.

Because especially at Ciri’s story the plot of the series deviates strongly from the books at times, removing important plot points and adding new ones. To make matters worse, it was revealed that some writers on the Netflix series weren’t fans of the books, and even openly mocked them.

Whether that alone was the real reason for Cavill’s exit cannot be determined with absolute certainty. Still, it’s plausible that behind-the-scenes opinions differed about the future of the series, leading to a difficult working atmosphere can lead.

In any case, it’s a great loss for Netflix to lose the actor in this way. One can only hope that Season 3 and 4 of The Witcher still worth seeing, whether with or without Henry Cavill.
