Windows 11: Microsoft is testing three different searches

from Claus Ludewig
Over the past few months, Microsoft has been testing various search bars in Windows 11. In the future, however, users should be able to choose.

The Windows Insider Program has existed since 2014, with registered participants receiving pre-release versions of the Microsoft operating system free of charge. The aim is to increase the test basis before general availability, so that ultimately a higher quality of the updates is ensured. However, this has not always worked satisfactorily. So-called A/B tests have been taking place in the Windows Insider Program since this year. This becomes visible in the search bar in Windows 11. There are now three different searches.

Search bar in Windows 11: users will have a choice in the future

According to Windowslatest, Microsoft is at work in a selection function for users, so that each user can decide for himself how the search should be displayed in the taskbar. So far, there is either a search icon or no search icon at all. In an insider preview, users can set which of the four options should be displayed in the taskbar settings. In addition to hiding, there is a search button, a search magnifying glass as an icon or a search bar to choose from.

With the change in relation to the search, Microsoft wants to counter criticism that interferes with the design of the search. So something is happening on the much-criticized Windows 11 taskbar. Microsoft is said to be internally testing the possibility of showing multiple app icons again when multiple windows of a program are open. So far, the taskbar groups all open instances of an app in one icon, as it has been since 2009 and Windows 7. However, in earlier versions of Windows you could always choose for yourself whether you wanted this grouping or not.
