The Last of Us hits: Series extended early

HBO’s series adaptation of The Last of Us is entering the next round.

The broadcaster has earlier confirmed that The Last of Us is returning for a second season.

No big surprise

Given the successful start of the series on January 15, 2023, this news should not come as a surprise.

According to the broadcaster, the premiere of The Last of Us was HBO’s second most watched series debut in more than a decade.

More The Last of Us news:

4.7 million viewers tuned in to the first episode, and the episode was viewed more than 18 million times within a week. The second episode saw the strongest growth for an original drama series in HBO history.

“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership,” said series writer Craig Mazin. “And I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey.”

“Working with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO has exceeded my already high expectations,” said Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann. “Now we have the great pleasure of repeating that with Season 2! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog and PlayStation, I want to say thank you!”

Most recently, Druckmann had emphasized that they only want to adapt the games and not go beyond them. So it’s quite possible that the second season – depending on where and how the first ends – will go directly into the events of the second part. As Mazin previously stated, the story of the second part could span several seasons.
