Empire: Total War – P.1 – User Article
teasers
The 18th Century. The great powers are gaining a foothold in America, subduing India and fighting over Europe. And we get involved! peace or war? Both are possible. The goal? world domination!
The Total War series is known for its mass battles. Set in a specific epoch (or fantasy world), each part gives us the opportunity to determine the rise and fall of entire nations and to prove ourselves as successful generals. We move our troops back and forth on a large world map, expand our infrastructure and research new technologies. Unlike the other parts of the series, dances Empire: Total War a little out of line. One could almost believe that no other title from the Total War series is loved so much, but hated above all. Opinions differ on this part. Right?
We start small
At the beginning of each game, we start with a certain number of provinces that we control. Some units are already under our command, but we can’t uproot trees with them yet. It may be that – depending on our chosen starting nation – we are already at war with a neighbor who is making life difficult for us right from the start. With our income from the provinces, we recruit more soldiers, and we also commission research into new technologies. Some nations offer us trade treaties, which of course we gratefully accept. Because it should already be clear that war will be very expensive.

Knowledge is power
Not knowing anything does not matter. But it is advisable not to neglect research. At universities or similar institutions we can research new technologies; alternatively, we can also dig deep and trade technology with other nations. Our soldiers not only get new equipment through research, but also cost less. In addition, the infrastructure can be improved; better road surfaces allow units to move farther each turn. Certain technologies allow us to expand buildings such as barracks, ports or entertainment facilities that ensure happiness among the population.
Money makes the world go round…
In the research menu we assign the universities the technology to be researched. |
Not to be underestimated: diplomacy
Sometimes it makes sense to talk to the neighbor first before resorting to ill-considered assaults. Thus, there is no need to declare war on a nation when we need to cross their territory to flank an enemy. For example, unless a nation despises us, we can get military access for a fee. Through long-standing trade relationships, common enemies or gifts, we can positively influence our relationship with other nations, which reduces the likelihood that they will eventually declare war on us. This can certainly play a role when we are at war, because there is also the possibility of forming alliances. If we, as Prussia, attack Poland-Lithuania, Russia will also declare war on us, since it is allied with Poland-Lithuania. Denmark will follow shortly thereafter, which in turn has entered into an alliance with Russia. However, if these nations are kind to us, they may break their treaties and not declare war on us. It is therefore advisable to pay attention to the relationships with your neighbors and also to keep an eye on their alliances, otherwise a multi-front war can quickly ensue.
there is war
In battle mode, the game is played in real time, unlike the rest of the game. We set up our troops and give them orders, which is also known from the other parts of the series. By winning battles, our troops gain experience that makes them stronger. We can also have the outcome of battles determined automatically, but in case of doubt we can play general ourselves and influence the course of the battle. With the cavalry we flank the opponent or fall in the back to eliminate his cannons. With our artillery we fire at the enemy troops, the infantry takes care of the rest. The battle is lost if you have no troops left, because they were destroyed or fled.
We fight not only on land, but also on the oceans. |
